In April 2025, Olive Rights to Health Initiative (ORHI), with partner community-based organisations (CBOs) and in partnership with Lawyers Alert Nigeria, paid an advocacy visit to the Nasarawa State Police Headquarters. The visit was part of the Advancing Capacity and Reducing Vulnerability project, supported by the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF).
The aim was to build stronger collaboration between civil society and law enforcement to promote human rights, end unlawful arrest and detention, address gender-based violence and sexual harassment, and improve protection for key populations and people living with HIV.
Discussions covered gender-based violence, unlawful detention, stigma and the need for inclusive, rights-based policing. The Office of the Commissioner of Police received the delegation, and we met the Gender Focal Unit, which expressed readiness to work with us on future interventions.
Closer cooperation between civil society and the police is an important step towards a safe, just and inclusive Nasarawa State for everyone.
